Club Penguin Review

Club Penguin is a snowy virtual world inhabited by a sea of multi-colored penguins. Established in 2005, the growing virtual world was purchased by Disney in 2007. It continues to do well and has a loyal user base.

What Kids Love About Club Penguin

Kids love penguins, so Club Penguin is already one step ahead of the game. The virtual world also has a nice balance of chat areas, games and special activities to keep kids engaged. It's colorful and creative with activities that appeal to a wide variety of personalities (including many adults).
Club Penguin strives to create a strong sense of community. They host contests, promotions and charitable events. Kids can feel good about their online play while making new friends.

What Parents Love About Club Penguin

Under the Disney umbrella, Club Penguin strives to be a safe, positive spot for kids and families. The basic rules users must agree to speak to that fact:
  • Respect other penguins.
  • No inappropriate talk.
  • Never reveal your personal information
  • No cheating.
Disney has also been adding parental controls to the site. When completed, they will allow parents to:
  • choose between a "safe" chat mode (canned messages only) or free chat
  • designate the time of day/length of time kids can be on Club Penguin
  • change the child's password
  • view account activity
In addition to teaching good practices in online communities and promoting safe behavior, Club Penguin encourages education with fun learning games and good citizenship with charitable activities. It's generally a positive place to be.

What's Not So Loveable

Residing in a popular virtual world has its drawbacks. The primary one is overcrowding. If you log on during popular times of day, you'll find yourself drowning in look-alike penguins. For younger kids, new members and folks like me, it's a bit overwhelming. It's hard to read the names of each penguin, and the chat becomes hard to read and follow.
The biggest complaint I have about Club Penguin is that many of the popular features are for members only. For example, although you can customize the color of your penguin, you can't dress him/her unless you have a membership. Non-members stand out like a sore thumb. Luckily, there are a lot of them! I accept that there may be premium features on a site, but I prefer for the difference between members and non-members to be a bit less glaring.
One other thing parents should note is that there have been complaints that the open chat can be inappropriate. Kids are creative about expressing themselves in ways that bypass filters and moderators. With the new limited chat option, this isn't as much of an issue, but I wouldn't recommend open chat for young kids.

The Bottom Line

With the addition of new parental controls and chat options, Club Penguin is a positive place for the whole family to play. Parents will still have to deal with requests for paid memberships, but can at least be assured that their children won't be logged on all day and night!
Club Penguin is geared for ages 6-14 and is free for basic registration. Memberships start at $5.95 a month.

IMVU Review

IMVU is a popular 3-D messenger game. You can make your own avatars and furnish your own rooms with items from their catalog to enhance your chat experience. The reason that people likes this game because when you are chatting, you are just typing meaning that it is text based but this game is visual text based meaning you can see the person and chat with him. There are also extra items that you can purchase, such as buying your screen name for few $$ which removes the Guest_ moniker from the front of your name. With a tiny client and a simple, but versatility graphic engine, IMVU allows players to unleash their creativity and meet new people. IMVU is more of a social experience than a traditional video game. They can design custom rooms, clothes, and other accessories. IMVU has a massive audience from around the world and continues to grow. Free players are labeled ‘guests’ and are restricted from the content creation portion of the game, but are free to explore virtual chat rooms and make friends. Players can also view videos and listen to music through the IMVU client.

iPad 2

apple image
The all new Apple iPad is here! This iPad is 33 percent thinner and is 15 percent lighter.  This means that it is easier to hold.  This iPad is also two times faster with the Dual-Core A5 Chip.  This makes for better gaming, a better time surfing the web, well basically a better time doing everything.  This new iDevice also features 2 cameras just like the latest iPhone.  Now you can use FaceTime on your iPad!

Oh and if that isn't all guess what else!  Apple has also made you a nice handy-dandy Smart Cover for it!  It attaches to your iPad magnetically and don't worry, it will not wipe the memory clean.  When the Smart Cover is attached the iPad will go into sleep mode and it will wake back up upon removal.  The Smart Cover also folds into a stand to make a nice prop-up for either video-watching or typing.

iPads start at $499.  You might be able to get one for less or maybe you'll get unlucky and it will cost more.

For more information on the new Apple iPad please visit the official Apple website!  Thank you!

Avoid becoming a victim of a phishing scam

Today, I am here to give you tips about how to avoid site scams so let's read it and have fun. Let's get started!

If you receive an email from a bank or any other company or anyone that you don't know and they asked you to click on the link in the email to enter you information, you should think again before entering your personal information. If you wanna confirm it then you can contact the company with the email provided other wise, it is the first step to scam.

If you are reading an email and it tell you to click on a specific link, then never ever click on that link because what they do is that they put on one website but they link it to a different website. The best option is to enter the link manually instead of click on the link.

When ever entering you credit card number or phone number or your address on a website, always look at the URL and make sure that it start with HTTPS because "S" stands for secure. If a website does not have that then entering your phone number or credit card number is not a good idea as the website is not secured.

Having an anti-virus program is always good idea. The reason you want to have them is because some emails contains malwares and spywares which is not good for the system.

Make sure that your system and all other softwares that you have are updated and have updated versions. It reduces the chances of hacking as scammers can access your system via unpatched software vulnerabilities.

That is all I have to say! Feel Free to Comment!

Prevent Hacking

So you wanna know how to prevent hacking? Well do not worry, I will show you how to prevent hacking. Let's Get Started!

The First thing you wanna do is to have a Firewall installed on your computer. It is the first step which keeps the hacker out of your network.

The second thing you wanna do is to change your computer password and make it stronger. To make it stronger, your password should involve some alphabets, characters, and numbers. That makes it hard for the program and hacker to decode your password.

Next, Install an anti-virus program on your computer, It keeps you and your computer safe. When someone is transferring you a file and you click on download or save as, anti-virus job is to scan that file and if file is clean, it will let it pass through otherwise, it will show you a message that we have detected something wrong with this file and that gives you a heads up that this file has virus!

Also, you might want to keep your operating system up to date as it is important. Every new version have something updated with it that keeps the hacker away from your system!

Only use the programs that you know you will need them for sure because unnecessary program takes space and as for your hacker, your computer becomes a really good target.

After few months, always runs few free test on your computer to check the security, space, heating system. what happens it that when you do not run any tests, there are little malwares sitting in your computer and everyday, they are becoming stronger and bigger as your are restarting and working on the computer. The next thing you know, that little malware has the control over your computer.

The last thing you wanna do is always check the news for latest news because everyday, there are news ways which shows you how your system can be hacked and it also tells you how to prevent hacking. These are lessons that are known as "Lesson Learned"!

That is all I have to say. Feel Free to Comment!

Types of Viruses

Today, I am gonna tell you the types of viruses so you how to prevent them. Let's get started!

Resident Viruses
This type of virus is a permanent which lives in the RAM(Random Access Memory) memory. Once it get to the Ram, it will overcome and corrupt all of the operations executed by the system.

Direct Action Viruses
The main purpose of this virus is to replicate and take action when it is executed.

Overwrite Viruses
This virus might cause you some pain + $$$. The purpose of this virus is that it deletes information contained inside the files that it infects. The only way to get rid of this type of virus is to completely delete the specific file that it has infected which will cause you to lose all the data contained in that file. Therefore, you always want to have to a back-up plan like me. Buy a CD or anything that has space in it and paste all of you folders in that CD so in case your computer gets crush or the data is corrupt, you will have your original file.

Boot Virus
It affects the boot sector of a floppy or hard disk. In short terms, when ever you insert that floppy or hard disk, it will cause your computer to reboot automatically which might cause you the lost of all the files that were running. Avoiding this issue involves the following things: Never start your computer with an unknown floppy disk in the disk drive.

Macro Virus
It infect types of files that are created using certain applications or programs which contains macros.

Directory Virus
It changes the path of a file meaning it changes the location of the file which makes it hard for you to find the file. Once you get that virus, it will become almost impossible for you to find the file.

File Infectors
It infects programs or executable files like files that starts with an .EXE or .COM extension. When the program is running, the virus will be activated whether you like it or not.

Worms
A program that has the ability to self-replicate and it can lead to negative effects on your system but most importantly, they are detected and eliminated by antiviruses.

Trojans or Trojan Horses
Another type of virus that you wanna stay away from.

Keeping Personal Information Safe Online

Before giving your information to anyone else online, ask your self one question. Am I doing the right thing? Can I trust that person. You know they say that your best friend could be your enemy so you might wanna think over again.

BBB suggests consumers get answers to the following questions when providing their information to any online shopping, social networking or location-based website to keep their personal information safe:
  • What information is collected?  Will the site collect your demographic information if you provide it?  Will it track your habits and what pages you visit?

  • How is the information collected?  Will the website collect information automatically through tracking technology such as cookies, or only if you provide the information?  Websites use cookies to place small text files on your computer that may be used to track your purchases, the pages you visit, or the ads you click on.  This information can be sold to marketers.

  • How is the information used?  Will it be shared with a third-party advertiser?  Will other users have access to this information if they have an account with the same social media site?  Will your spending habits with an online shopping site be shared with advertisers?

  • Who will have access to the information?  Does the site share the consumer’s information with other sites online, other companies, or with affiliates within the same corporate family?
What security measures are used to protect your personal information?  Security measures should be used to keep the user’s personal information, including login and password, safe.

  • Who is accountable for the privacy practices?  Are you comfortable with the website’s privacy policy?  Does the website privacy policy give you someone to contact with questions or concerns?

Is your Computer Running Slow?

Today, I will show you how to make your computer run faster. First of all, you might wanna know what are the causes of the computer running slow? Well here it is:

  • Not enough hard disk space.
  • Left over programs and bad files.
  • Data Corruption.
  • Missing Windows updates / Outdated drivers.
  • Computer is overheating.
  • Corrupt Operating System.
  • Bad Hardware.
How to fix it?

For Microsoft Window Users: Here are the solutions to fix your computer!

The first thing you wanna do is to restart the computer which is also known as rebooting. It is important to reboot your computer because sometimes there are files that need to be installed by restarting the computer. When you restart the computer, the new files are installed and your computer is good to go!

Hard Drive: Verify that your computer has at least 200 - 400 Mega Bytes of free hard disk drive space. This space allows the computer to have room for swap file and also have room for temporary files.

Hard Drive Corrupt: You need to run ScanDisk on your computer to verify that your computer's hard drive is not physically wrong.

Defragment: Run Defragment on your computer to make sure all the data is in order.

Malware: Malware and Spyware are big issues to the computers these day. It can be caused by inserting a CD, downloading a file, transferring a file, or even chatting with a friend. Sometimes, your anti-virus program might not detect that malware or spyware. From this you can tell how smart today's technology is. You can run a free amleware test on your computer by going to this link:
 http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

Programs: If you have any program installed that runss automatically, each time you restart the computer then you will need to disable that program because it increases the amount of speed on your computer. You can find out which program is running by going to Task Manager.

Window: Make sure you update your window because if you have old version and you haven't updated the windows then it will be a problem for you. The reason that it will be problem for you is because all the softwares get updated automatically as the new window gets updated.

Memory: If your computer is old and I mean like 3 - 4 years old then you might wanna think of upgrading your memory. It is recommended to have at least 2 - 3 GB space.

Overheating: Make sure your computer and processor is not overheating because overheating can cause a significant decrease in computer performance. Here is the temperature that your processor should be running at. This table it taken from www.computerhope.com:
ProcessorsAverage temperature

How to set up your home wireless network

First of all, you will need the following things:
  • Shop for a wireless router
  • Shop for a computer with built-in wireless networking support
  • Shop for a wireless network adapter
Now, Lets Get Started:

1. Connect to the Internet

Make sure that your Internet connection and your DSL or cable modem are working. Your wireless network depends on this connection.

2. Connect your wireless router

These are the steps for connecting a stand-alone wireless router to your DSL modem or cable modem. If you have a modem router, follow your ISP’s instructions for connecting your network.
Since you'll be temporarily disconnected from the Internet, print these instructions before you go any further.
First, locate your cable modem or DSL modem and unplug it to turn it off.
Next, connect your wireless router to your modem. Your modem should stay connected directly to the Internet. Later, after you've hooked everything up, your computer will wirelessly connect to your router, and the router will send communications through your modem to the Internet.
Wireless router setup map
Next, connect your router to your modem:
Note: The instructions below apply to a Linksys wireless router. The ports on your router may be labeled differently, and the images may look different on your router. Check the documentation that came with your equipment for additional assistance. Or do a Bing search on “[your manufacturer/model] wireless router setup” to find images and instructions.
  • If you currently have your computer connected directly to your modem: Unplug the network cable from the back of your computer, and plug it into the port labeled Internet, WAN, or WLAN on the back of your router.
  • If you do not currently have a computer connected to the Internet: Plug one end of a network cable (included with your router) into your modem, and plug the other end of the network cable into the Internet, WAN, or WLAN port on your wireless router.
  • If you currently have your computer connected to a router: Unplug the network cable connected to the Internet, WAN, or WLAN port from your current router, and plug this end of the cable into the Internet, WAN, or WLAN port on your wireless router. Then, unplug any other network cables, and plug them into the available ports on your wireless router. You no longer need your original router, because your new wireless router replaces it.
Wireless modem lightsNext, plug in and turn on your cable or DSL modem. Wait a few minutes to give it time to connect to the Internet, and then plug in and turn on your wireless router. After a minute, the Internet, WAN, or WLAN light on your wireless router should light up, indicating that it has successfully connected to your modem.

3. Configure your wireless router

Wireless cablesUsing the network cable that came with your wireless router, you should temporarily connect your computer to one of the open network ports on your wireless router (any port that isn't labeled Internet, WAN, or WLAN). If you need to, turn your computer on. It should automatically connect to your router.
Next, open Internet Explorer and type in the URL or address to configure your router.
NOTE: Do this on the computer that you are using to set up your wireless network. The computer automatically links you to the router’s page. If you type the router’s URL on a different computer, typing the address in the navigation bar will not take you to your router’s configuration page.
On the router configuration page, you might be prompted for a password. The address and password you use varies depending on what type of router you have, so refer to the instructions included with your router or on the manufacturer’s website.
For quick reference, this table shows the default addresses, user names, and passwords for some common router manufacturers. If the address is not listed here, you can read the documentation that came with your router or go to the manufacturer's webpage to find it. There may be multiple website addresses you can use.
RouterAddressUsernamePassword
3Comhttp://192.168.1.1adminadmin
D-Linkhttp://192.168.0.1adminadmin
Linksyshttp://192.168.1.1adminadmin
Microsoft Broadbandhttp://192.168.2.1adminadmin
Netgearhttp://192.168.0.1adminpassword
Actiontechttp://192.168.0.1usernamepassword
Internet Explorer shows your router's configuration page, along with the modem IP address and other information. Most of the default settings should be fine, but you need to configure three things:
  • Your wireless network name, known as the SSID. This name identifies your network, and it appears in a list of available wireless networks. You should change the default SSID that your ISP provided and give your network a unique name that none of your neighbors are using. This helps you identify your network, and it can help keep your wireless network secure by preventing it from overlapping with other wireless networks that might be using the default SSID.
  • Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA or WPA2), which can help protect your wireless network. It’s important to help secure your wireless network by setting up a network security key, which turns on encryption. With encryption, people can't connect to your network without the security key, and all information sent across your network is encrypted so that only computers with the key to decrypt the information can read it. This can help prevent attempts to access your network and files without your permission. Wi Fi Protected Access (WPA or WPA2) is the recommended wireless network encryption method. Wireless encryption (WEP) is not as secure. Windows 7, Windows Vista Service Pack 2, and Windows XP Service Pack 3 support WPA2.

When you set up most routers (stand-alone routers and modem routers), you are asked to provide a pass phrase that the router uses to generate several keys. Make sure that your pass phrase is unique and long (you don't need to memorize it). Some routers and modem routers now come with a function called Quick Security Setup (or QSS) that automatically issues you a key when you press a button on the router.

Be sure to keep a hard copy and a digital copy of your network security key and pass phrase, in case you lose or misplace them. You can recover a lost network key or reset it on your router, but these are complicated processes that are different for every router and they sometimes entail setting up your network again.
  • Your administrative password, which controls your wireless network. Just like any other password, it should not be a word that you can find in the dictionary, and it should be a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. Be sure to save a hard copy and a digital copy of this password, too, because you'll need it if you ever have to change your router's settings.
The exact steps you follow to configure these settings will vary depending on the type of router you have. After each configuration setting, be sure to click Save Settings, Apply, or OK to save your changes.
Get more help making your network secure.
Now, before connecting your computers and devices to the network, you should disconnect the wireless network cable from your computer.

4. Connect your computers, printers, and other devices to the wireless network

You can connect multiple computers, printers, and many other peripheral devices, such as an Xbox, Xbox 360, TV, cell phone, iTouch, or iPad, to your network. Before you connect them to your network, make sure that the computer or device you want to add has built-in wireless networking or a network adapter. Many newer devices have built-in wireless capability. If the computer or device you want to add does not have built-in wireless network support, plug the network adapter into your USB port and place the antenna on top of your computer (in the case of a desktop computer) or insert the network adapter into an empty PC card slot (in the case of a laptop). Windows automatically detects the new adapter and may prompt you to insert the CD that came with your adapter. The on-screen instructions guide you through the configuration process.
Use the following links to find step-by-step instructions for adding your specific computer or device to your network using your operating system. There are instructions for each operating system, and they show you how to automatically or manually add wired (Ethernet) or wireless computers and how to add computers running Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP. There are also instructions for adding printers and both wired and wireless devices.

5. Share files, printers, and more

Now that your computers and devices are connected, you can begin sharing files, printers, games, and much more. One of the top reasons for setting up a home network is to share a printer. Another is to share files.

    HTTP VS HTTPS

Today, my research leads me to something new which I think that I should share as it is really important. So read the article and if you have any questions then feel free to leave comment or contact us at support@tech-students.com or use our contact form.

HTTP: HTTP Stands for Hyper Text Transport Protocol. It is a protocol which passes the information back and forth between web servers and clients.

HTTPS: HTTPS Stands for Hyper Text Transport Protocol Secure. It is also a protocol which passes the information back and forth between web servers and clients but it transfers everything with more secure network.

    What is the difference?

The Difference is that HTTPS is more secure as a pose to HTTP which is not so secure and that is why you do not want to enter our credit card information on a website that begins with HTTP. When you visit a website or a page webpage, chances are that it will most likely start with HTTP.

    What does this means?

This means that the website and your browser are talking to each other using unsecured language. In short terms, it is possible for someone to see your conversation on that website. When you are filling out a form on a website, another person from outside might be able to see what you have sent to that website. Again, this is why you never ever want to enter your credit card number in an HTTP Website.

    What about HTTPS?

When your computer is talking to HTTPS website, then it means that you are safe because no one can crack HTTPS as it has got the word “S – Secure” in it.

In the future, if a website ever asks you to enter your personal information like your credit card number. The first thing you want to do is to looks for HTTPS. If it is not in HTTPS then some websites might have the ability to be changed to HTTPS so just change it to HTTPS which means you are secure to enter your personal information.
